THE CROSSROADS Altar Stele / Hanging Altar Tablet
A highly intricate and decorative carving based upon one of my own personal illustrations. Carved in solid walnut hardwood. 24.5cm (9 2/3 inches) wide, 38cm (just under 15 inches) tall and 2cm (just over 3/4 inch) thick. Available with or without a recessed panel to the rear housing a hanging device.
This is a personal piece of mine that I'm making available for commission. It's based upon an illustration I did for an altar stele (hanging altar tablet) for my own practice. Inspired when I was working with some Jan Fries material -- the carving depicts the Tree as the Crossroads to the Chthonic (Underworld) and Celestial worlds. Seven stars shine at the pinnacle of the piece, representing the celestial as well as the powers of the six ways and the centre, all balanced. The cord reaches down into the underworld and to the ancestors. The gateway to the tree is found at the heart of the world we live in, with the moon cycling around it in all its phases. Well, that's what it represents to me -- you may work with it differently.
The detail and texture in the walnut was achieved with detailed engraving bits and rotary tools. The contrast of the carved areas was achieved with several applications of wax, oils, sanding and polishing for a smooth surface with a gentle lustre. The walnut is really brought to life under different lights -- the photos show it in natural lights which really change the tones and vibrancy. Display this piece in the lighting conditions of your choice to really bring it to life!
This piece is made to order. It'll take me around 4 weeks to make one of these for you. I'll send you work in progress photos etc as the piece nears completion. I ship internationally with full tracking etc. Thank you.
